Otago Highlights and Surrounding Areas
Dunedin – Renowned for its proximity to incredible wildlife. Visits to see the world's rarest penguins, the world's only mainland breeding colony of the royal albatross and rare New Zealand sea lions are all possible within a short drive of the city centre.
Dunedin is also memorable for its historical architecture. It is regarded to be one of the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities in the Southern Hemisphere.
Milford Sound – Described by Rudyard Kipling as the “eighth wonder of the world”, was carved out during successive ice ages and, at its deepest point off Mitre Peak, plunges to a depth of 265 metres.
The grandeur of Milford Sound can be appreciated from the air or water. Bowen Falls hurtling 165 metres into the sea, and the Stirling Falls further down the sound, set amidst the towering cliffs and dwarfed by Mitre Peak, are truly spectacular after rain.
Stewart Island – A haven for native bird life and the only place in New Zealand where you can readily see kiwi in their natural habitat.
The island is large—64 kilometres long and 40 kilometres across. While the coastline is 700 kilometres, there are only 20 kilometres of roads! As well as kiwi, the island is home to many other native bird varieties—including kaka, tui and bellbird. Sea birds abound off-shore, albatross, petrels, cormorants, gulls and blue penguins are common. Rarer species like yellow-eyed penguins, also called hoiho, are also seen often.
Aoraki Mount Cook – Is New Zealand’s highest mountain at 3,753 metres. Aoraki is Maori for Cloud Piercer. It towers above a splendid cast of massive snow-clad peaks that make up the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.
Nudging one side of Aoraki Mount Cook is the mighty Tasman Glacier, a 30-kilometre giant and one of the longest outside the Himalayas.
Queenstown – The Southern Hemisphere's premiere four-season alpine and lake resort. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and overlooked by the majestic Remarkables Range, Queenstown is the perfect destination all year round.
About New Zealand
The North Island is a land of geothermal activity, golden beaches and sub-tropical rainforests, and its climate makes for a year-round destination. Geysers, mud pools, and live volcanoes are found throughout the region.
At the heart of the North Island is Lake Taupo, the result of volcanic eruptions over two thousand years ago.
The South Island of New Zealand is a land of geographic extremes, from the imposing snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, to vast plains, glacial-fed lakes and stunning coastal fiords.
Aoraki Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain is located here, flanked by the Tasman Glacier. Much of the island is densely forested.
The South Island's largest city, Christchurch, is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place with exciting festivals, theatre, modern art galleries, great shopping and award-winning attractions. An easy drive from Christchurch is Kaikoura, famous for its whale-watching attractions.
On the rugged south-west coast is Milford Sound, once described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth wonder of the world. Nearby Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital and a year-round destination for thrill-seekers.
