Whitewater Sledging

In the late '70s some keen Frenchmen were floating down stream lying on bags full of life jackets and polystyrene. In 1981 the first water sledge was built (hydro speed or hydro speeding) it's now a professional sport in Europe and gaining popularity around the world including New Zealand.

The attraction of whitewater sledging is that you are in control, propelled by the flippers on you feet. The sledges are river purpose designed and made of plastic.

Kaitiaki Adventures present Sledging in Rotorua, the ultimate adrenaline action experience and sport.

You are equipped with a padded wetsuit, booties, life jacket, helmet and fins for kicking, providing propulsion and steering. Your chest rests on the board and your arms are tucked neatly inside for good grip and control. The great thing about sledging is that you don't need any experience.

Your instructor will coach and teach you all the skills required to become a complete whitewater sledger. They will guide you down the river taking the safest route.

We offer free transport, showers, all the gear you need and you don't need any previous experience!

Whitewater Rafting

Pass through steep, bush clad canyons, over 14 awesome drops, including the seven metre Tutea falls on one of our awesome river rafting trips in Rotorua.

The translation of our name Kaitiaki is Guardianship, Caretaker or Master, and your safety is our primary concern.

Although any true adventure is not without an element of risk, we take our chosen profession as your caretakers and guardians for this adventure very seriously and we give total respect to the river at all times.

Whitewater rafting and sledging is a serious sport and adventure activity. Strict water safety procedures are observed and we supply you with the most up-to-date safety equipment available.

Location

We are based near the Kaituna River in the tourism capital of New Zealand, Rotorua, the home of New Zealand Maori culture, awesome geothermal activity, and the best extreme sports and activities.

In the provided courtesy transport customers arrive at Kaitiaki Adventures Base just 20 minutes from town at Okere falls, where the customers can shower and change at their leisure, just minutes from the mighty Kaituna river.

Kaituna River—1.8 kilometres of extreme whitewater action, including the renowned Tutea Falls, with a seven metre drop into white knuckle foamy water.

Amidst the peaceful bush clad valley the Kaituna River drops away providing 14 adrenalin-loaded fun filled rapids.

The Kaituna River holds a special place in our hearts, this area is sacred to the Maori and Kaitiaki show respect by beginning each trip with a karakia-prayer.

Kaitiaki Adventures mixes culture, adrenalin and history giving you an unforgettable excursion down the Kaituna River.

Wairoa River—New Zealand's most popular and full on experience. Rapids such as “Mother's Nightmare”, “Devil's Hole” and “Roller Coaster” await you. This sensational river will thrill you from start to finish.

Due to irregular Dam release the Wairoa River is only available 26 days per year so bookings are essential.

Rangataiki River—fringed by the panoramic Urewera ranges nestled amongst the biggest planted pine forest in the southern hemisphere, lays the Rangitaiki River.

A technical Grade 4 River, full of variety and excitement. Ride it by raft or for those adrenalin junkies, by sledge. Hot shower, change facilities, courtesy transport and refreshments provided for both activities.
