In the late '70s some keen Frenchmen were floating down stream lying on bags full of life jackets and polystyrene. In 1981 the first water sledge was built (hydro speed or hydro speeding) it's now a professional sport in Europe and gaining popularity around the world including New Zealand.
The attraction of whitewater sledging is that you are in control, propelled by the flippers on you feet. The sledges are river purpose designed and made of plastic.
