This is where it all began!

Adventure and adrenalin runs through the Kiwi blood, so perhaps it's not surprising we were first in the world to invent the exciting adventure sport of ‘black water rafting’ in Waitomo.

It was back in 1987 we first began guiding adventurous souls through the magical Ruakuri Cave. Since then, we've introduced over half a million people—from all around the world—to blackwater rafting in this mysterious, fun-filled underworld of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.

Our Black Water Rafting in Waitomo

Black Labyrinth – The Original Classic Adventure (allow three hours)

You'll weave, jump and float your way through the glowworm-studded underworld of Ruakuri Cave. Together we'll explore this amazing labyrinth of rock, water and inky darkness... catching glimpses of daylight through a 65-metre tunnel, finally emerging into lush native forest.

Black Abyss – The Ultimate Caving Adventure (allow five hours)

Challenge your senses in a way like no other. In this ultimate adrenalin rush, you'll take a 35-metre abseil into the black depths of Ruakuri Cave, take a flying fox through the dark, float downstream under glowworms, cave slide down a weir, and jump off waterfalls.

All trips include complimentary hot showers, cave snack, soup and bagels and free entry to the Museum of Caves.

Other Waitomo Options

Waitomo Glowworm Caves – Suitable for all ages we also have a dry option. Visit the world famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Journey underground on a subterranean adventure through limestone chambers and passages. Be suspended in awe and silence, surrounded by cave decorations and a galaxy of tiny living lights found in the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. As you glide quietly beneath the lights of thousands of glowworms, it is only the gentle sound of dripping water that reminds you that you are deep underground and not beneath a star filled sky.

Waitomo Big Red 4x4 Wheel Bikes – Drive your own 4x4 wheel bike for a gripping two-hour experience and a chance to view some of New Zealand's spectacular farmland. Venture through rugged bush, over green pastures and amongst New Zealand's interesting farm animals. Once you get back from your tour, hot soup and bagels awaits at the Long Black Cafe, where you have the opportunity to converse with the guides and laugh about the thrilling experience you have just encountered. Hot showers and separate changing facilities are also provided.

Schools and Corporate Challenges – The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company also provide activities for schools as well as Corporate Challenges for business organisations, to encourage team building, problem solving and having fun.

Tour Information

Please bring a swimsuit and towel with you. We will provide wetsuits, socks, cave helmets, boots and a cave ‘raft’ (inner tube).

Daily tours depart from 9:00 am (except Christmas Day) from 585 Waitomo Caves Road, SH37, Waitomo Caves.

The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company is a passionate guardian of Waitomo's unique caving environment. That's why, in conjunction with the Australian and New Zealand Cave and Karst Management Association, we are committed to protecting and nurturing this incredible natural wonder.

Caves can be adversely affected when people visit them. Artificial lighting, pathways and changes to air temperature and humidity can alter the delicate eco-balance, eventually drying out and destroying the cave interior.

As a Department of Conservation licenced operator, you can be assured that all our tours are conducted in accordance with nature's best interests in mind.
