The main fish in Lake Taupo are the rainbow and brown trout, as well as the smelt which the trout feed on, and a small fresh water crayfish called kura.
Brown trout, a European relative of the Atlantic salmon, arrived in Taupo as early as 1880 and were introduced to Rotorua waters in 1891.
These resourceful fish managed well in degraded habitats no longer suitable for brook and other trout. At the same time, the browns proved they could grow faster and live longer than the other kinds of trout. Their reputation as a wary fish that tends to feed at dusk or night may account in part for their durability.
Brown trout have adjusted well to life in Lake Taupo. They spawn in late autumn, sometimes on rocky reefs along shore though they generally prefer the gravely headwaters of streams.
Taupo now has several million wild trout in the lake, with lesser numbers stocked by Rotorua. This has brought more variety to the lake's ecosystem and to the lives of many anglers.
Brown trout are among the wariest of fish, feeding usually at dusk or at night, so fishermen are the adult brown's chief predator. In many localities, surf casting for brown trout is popular.
Approximately 300 tonnes of fish caught every year in Lake Taupo.
Lake Taupo offers excellent fishing all year round. There is no closed season on the lake. Most fishing on Lake Taupo takes the form of trolling with lures or flies, as no form of bait fishing is permitted.
In the spring and early summer the light tackle trolling with streamer flies, called harling, is at its best. The Rainbow Trout have just returned to the lake, having completed their spawning runs, and feed hungrily on the smelt now in the shallow waters for their annual spawn. Fishing is best morning and evening, however, when the right conditions prevail, the harling may continue all day long. Otherwise conditions may dictate a change to downriggers to fish the deeper waters where bright overhead conditions don't put them off “the bite”.
Later in the summer once the water temperature increases the fish tend to seek the cooler waters down deep and whilst there is still productive harling early morning and in the evenings for the most part during the day we use down riggers at varying depths to ensure success.
The average weight of trout is about four pounds. Whether the fishing is great or not so great on your particular trip, the beautiful clear and unpolluted waters, wonderful scenery, and friendly crew will inspire you to remember Lake Taupo as a destination marked for your return.
