Penny Whiting Sailing School Introduction

The mythical landscapes of New Zealand were the perfect location for Middle Earth in Peter Jackson's epic trilogy The Lord of the Rings.

Auckland, New Zealand is an ideal place for boating and marine adventure. Local attractions include fishing and boating in a superb environment. We delight in using these most attractive features to the fullest advantage.

Imagine all the facilities of New Zealand's major city and the sheltered waters of the famous Hauraki Gulf, the America's Cup venue in the past.

For over 30 years Penny Whiting has been teaching people of all ages to sail in Auckland, New Zealand. With her own entertaining form of instruction, Penny will take you through all aspects of sailing aboard her 47' keeler "Endless Summer" in five three-hour all-practical lessons for NZ$650.00 all inclusive.

This is a practical way to gain the skills and confidence of boat handling and safety so you can enjoy your sailing fully.

Courses – 15 hour duration which can be five three-hour practical lessons every afternoon for a week or two evenings a week or two weekends.

The Auckland Sailing School

Penny's School is world famous for her down to earth practical and fun courses, now in its 30th year of sailing tuition. A certificate is presented at the successful conclusion of the course, and this is accepted by charter operators world wide.

The school has a well organised programme of courses. The classes are all practical and you will do five three-hour lessons, including three-hour navigation. The classes are run through the summer months of "Down Under"—October, November, December, January, February, March and April. There is a full timetable, including afternoon, evening, weekend, children's and refresher classes.

The Yacht used at our Auckland Sailing School

The yacht Endless Summer is 47 foot long, and is based in Auckland's sparkling Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, New Zealand. You must learn to sail a large yacht before a small one, and the Endless Summer is an easy yacht to sail. Its berth is at Marina E 10 in the Westhaven Boat Harbour by the RNZYS (on the city side of the Auckland Harbour Bridge).

Course Outline

• How to rig and sail a yacht and the terminology and fittings used
• You will steer the yacht, learn wind direction and how to change tacks when sailing
• We do headsail changes, slab reefing, flaking sails and packing a spinnaker
• The rules of the sea are important as are the bouyage and collision rules
• You will learn to splice and do a practical chart work navigation lesson
• All aspects that will enable you to sail with anyone or sail and handle your own yacht
• You will understand commands about sailing manoeuvres

What to Wear

• Warm clothes and jacket or sweatshirt
• Clean shoes, not black soled
• Wet weather gear will be provided for you if cold or wet
• Bring a hat, with a tie down!

About Penny

Few New Zealanders have packed as much into their lives as Penny Whiting. Best known as a yachtswoman and the owner-operator of the Penny Whiting Sailing School, she has also been a swimming champion, international surfing competitor, rugby coach, writer, celebrity speaker, mother of two, America's Cup and Whitbread commentator and Auckland city councillor.

In more than 30 years she has not missed one class, and her yacht Endless Summer, floating school to over 20,000 students, is a familiar sight on Auckland's Waitamata Harbour.
