Rossendale White Wines – In New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is 25% of the national vineyard by planting, and in 2000 was 19% of the national harvest. Two-thirds of New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc is from Marlborough where there is an annual increase in new planting, in an attempt to reach the world demand for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Rossendale has joint ownership of several Marlborough vineyards which are managed under contract. Each vineyard is of a different soil type which influences the flavours and profiles of the resulting wines. The vineyards are managed on upright canopy systems and a careful spray programme is used.
Riesling grows readily in New Zealand and is becoming increasingly popular. It is often made in an “off dry” style where the primary fruit characteristics are retained. Riesling may also be picked as a late harvest variety, often after infection with botyritis, also known as noble rot. These late harvest grapes produce a sweet dessert wine full of honey and nectar flavours.
Rossendale Red Wines – Pinot Noir is the classic grape of the Burgandy region of France. Canterbury is proving to be a very suitable climate for producing good quality Pinot Noir wines. Pinot Noir is typically described as being soft and feminine.
A good Pinot Noir should have aromas associated with summer fruits such as raspberry and plum with a hint of tobacco. The wine is a light-style red with a soft finish and an emphasis on retaining the primary fruit flavours. The oak treatment adds flavour complexity and tannins to help stabilise both colour and flavour in this difficult to make wine. The grapes for this wine were all grown in the Halswell area.
