Mitre Peak Cruises offer spectacular Milford Sound cruises, an unforgettable New Zealand experience.
Described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth Wonder of the World—and more recently voted the number one spot in the "101 must-do's for Kiwis"—Milford Sound's deep icy waters, sheer rock faces, glacial hanging valleys, thick native forest and local wildlife are best seen by boat on a day cruise of Fiordland's Milford Sound.
Mitre Peak Cruises offer competitively priced tours to the most un-spoilt parts of Fiordland's World Heritage area, running a regular daily schedule throughout the year.
Mitre Peak Cruises offers regular two-hour trips traversing the deep waters of Milford Sound.
The only cruise option that always goes past St Anne's lighthouse and out into the Tasman Sea, our Milford Sound cruises give our passengers a chance to enter Milford Sound from the outside, approaching it just as the first sealers did at the end of the 18th century.
The informative guides on our Milford Sound cruises point out scenic highlights along the way, such as the Bowen Falls (dropping 160 metres seaward), Sinbad Gully (a classic example of a hanging valley), snow-capped Mount Pembroke, and the awe-inspiring Mitre Peak itself, 1692 metres above the ocean floor.
Having smaller launches (approximately 20 metres) allows Mitre Peak Cruises to navigate closer to the shoreline, getting our passengers up close to the incredible surroundings on our Milford Sound cruises.
Purpose-built for Milford waters, the boats used on our day cruises of Fiordland's beautiful Milford Sound make great viewing platforms should we encounter the local fur seal colonies—once nearly hunted to extinction—the rare Fiordland crested penguins or pods of dusky dolphins.

Milford Sound, located at the northern most end of Fiordland National Park, is a national icon. In places as much as 400 metres deep, celebrated for its pristine landscapes, and remote and rugged beauty, it is actually a fiord, rather than a sound. A river formed valley subsequently flooded by the sea is called a sound, however, Milford Sound was formed by the erosive effects of a glacier and is technically a fiord.
Named after its resemblance to a bishop's mitre (head-dress), Mitre Peak is a prominent peak on the south shore of Milford Sound. Rising 1692 metres, seemingly sheer above the Sound, the summit consists of five closely grouped individual peaks.
Milford Sound is rich in indigenous flora and fauna. New Zealand fur seals, once nearly hunted to extinction, are now live in plentiful numbers and are often seen on our Milford Sound cruises, along with dusky dolphins and the rare Fiordland crested penguins.
As one of the most dramatic and beautiful areas of New Zealand, Fiordland has achieved World Heritage status and is often called the Sightseeing and Walking Capital of the world.
The best base for exploring the Fiordland area is the resort town of Te Anau. From here it is an easy two hour's drive to Milford Sound and twenty minutes drive to Lake Manapouri and the start of a Doubtful Sound excursion. The road to Milford Sound is considered to be one of the world's best alpine drives.
You can explore Fiordland National Park by foot, sea kayak or boat, or take to the air and do it the flightseeing way. Fiordland National Park covers 1.2 million hectares and showcases dramatic wilderness on a grand scale.
Waterfalls flow hundreds of metres into pristine, forested valleys, sheer-sided fiords slide gracefully into the sea, rare native birds and sea creatures go about their lives in a near-perfect world.
