Kiwi House and Native Bird Park Introduction

Visit Kiwi House and Native Bird Park, our kiwi reserve and Waikato wildlife park, and view the famous bird, the kiwi.

The Kiwi House and Native Bird Park is owned and operated by the Otorohanga Zoological Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of New Zealand's native birds and wildlife.

The kiwi is an indigenous flightless bird found only in New Zealand. It lives in native forests and grasslands.

The kiwi is a semi-nocturnal, secretive bird, and few New Zealanders have seen their national bird in the wild.

Activities at our Kiwi Reserve and Waikato Wildlife Park

Come to our Waikato wildlife park and view kiwi in a truly unique setting with Kiwi Watch. From the comfort of a hide you will encounter kiwi at eye level and observe them feeding amongst the leaf litter.

Kiwi Watch takes place outside of our normal wildlife park visiting hours, so bookings are essential. Each session is restricted to a maximum of six persons, plus the guide.

The kiwi park in Waikato houses a wide variety of New Zealand native birds. The morepork (New Zealand owl) is a common night bird and our only surviving native owl.

Of the forest birds, we have a range of smaller coloured parakeets (also called kakariki) along with the kaka parrots and kea parrots.

There are birds with melodious calls, such as the nectar-feeding tui that is famous for its melodious song. The kokodo (blue-wattled crow) continue to survive in small numbers in areas of native bush throughout the North Island.

The Waikato

Travelling south from Auckland, the Waikato is the first region south of Greater Auckland.

Centred on the Waikato River, The Waikato region contains some of the world's most productive farmlands.

The main centre is the university town of Hamilton, which has an impressive collection of Maori treasures in its Museum of Art and History.

Beneath the rolling green fields in the south are the Waitomo Caves, whose cathedral-like caverns have long attracted sightseers but now also cater for thrill seekers exploring the underground streams and shafts.

Glide through the darkness on a water-borne barge and admire the beauty and grandeur of the caves and glow-worms overhead.
