The range of unique geothermal activity is extensive and includes huge volcanic craters formed by the ground collapsing over the last 700 years.

Features include huge craters, steaming ground, sinter terrace formations, coloured hot and cold water springs of which the Champagne Pool and Devil's Bath have to be seen to be believed.

Throughout the reserve there are a number of lookout points which provide an elevated perspective of the environment.

Easily understood information about volcanic activity, fauna and flora within the reserve complements the comprehensive coloured guide map which is provided to each visitor.

Lady Knox Geyser

At 10.15am each day there is the opportunity to learn the history and mechanics of the Lady Knox Geyser. Come and experience natural geothermal activity while listening to a presentation by an informed guide in the natural amphitheatre.

See a natural volcanic geyser in eruption to heights of 10 to 20 metres.

The Lady Knox Geyser is located in a separate area from the Visitor Centre (a three-minute drive in your own vehicle) where there is also plenty of parking. Directions to her location are given when tickets are purchased from the Visitor Centre.

Mud Pools

A visit to our Rotorua geothermal reserve would not be complete without taking the opportunity to visit what is locally known as the "Mud Pool".

The Mud Pools are the site of a large mud volcano which was destroyed through erosion in the 1920's.

It now represents one of the best opportunities to experience the unique character and sounds of erupting mud in New Zealand. Geothermal activity in this area is always guaranteed.

Visitor Centre

The Visitor Centre has been completely upgraded and incorporates a well stocked souvenir area catering for all ages while the Geyser Cafe provides an excellent range of food and beverage.

The associated Sky Deck provides a covered area of additional cafe seating with a view into the steaming activity of the main park and the Wai-O-Tapu stream.

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland offers the visitor a truly memorable experience.
