Peter Warren Fly Fishing Introduction

The Nelson region of New Zealand is world renowned for its excellent fly fishing, and Pigeon Valley Lodge can show you just how well-deserved this reputation is. Peter Warren is widely recognised as an expert fly fishing guide, and having him as your host at Pigeon Valley Lodge can only enhance your experience.

The Nelson region is world-renowned as a superb brown trout fishery, and quite rightly so. The rivers are clear, flowing through native bush and, in them, large brown trout with honey-golden flanks and spots on their sides as big as your thumbnail.

But these are not easy targets. They can be selective, always wary and, when hooked, dirty fighters, heading for rocks, logs, and anything else to aid their escape. But they can rise freely to a dry, take a nymph with enthusiasm and smash a cicada.

If you want to take up the challenge of hooking into a Nelson brown trout, I can help make that dream a reality. I have been fishing for over thirty-five years, since my early childhood. I was brought up on a farm on the banks of the Rangitata River in Canterbury, New Zealand. I spent my younger days in summer chasing salmon and brown trout in the Rangitata.

Now settled in the Nelson area, my wife Alison and I own Pigeon Valley Lodge, twenty minutes south of Nelson.

I provide a top quality guiding service with 4WD vehicle and boat transport or arrange helicopter fly-ins to remote headwaters.

As well as day trips, I offer camp-outs, staying in forest huts and multi-day fishing trips. This keeps you right on the water and maximises the time available for fishing.

Peter Warren Fly Fishing offers:

  • 29 years fly fishing experience
  • Quality 4WD vehicle and boat
  • Superb lunches and refreshments
  • Quality tackle if required
  • Casting tuition
  • Member of New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA)

Travelling New Zealand

Split into two main islands, and roughly the same size as Great Britain, New Zealand is a country of diverse geographical features—from lush rainforests to vast alpine chains, steaming volcanoes and sweeping coastlines.

The South Island is a land of geographic extremes, from the imposing snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, to vast plains, glacial-fed lakes and stunning coastal fiords. Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain is located here, flanked by the Tasman Glacier. Much of the island is densely forested.

The South Island's largest city, Christchurch is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place with exciting festivals, theatre, modern art galleries, great shopping and award-winning attractions. An easy drive from Christchurch is Kaikoura, famous for its whale-watching attractions.

On the rugged south-west coast is Milford Sound, once described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth wonder of the world. Nearby Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital and a year-round destination for thrill-seekers.

Nelson Region

Nelson is known for its year-round sun, golden beaches, three national parks, 350 working artists, boutique wineries and the city for its historical streetscapes, waterfront cafes, fresh seafood, and a thoroughly relaxed lifestyle.

Nelson is named after Admiral Lord Nelson of Battle of Trafalgar fame, is the main commercial centre for the region, whose main industries are forestry, horticulture, fishing and tourism.

Only the West Coast has as many national parks as Nelson. Abel Tasman, New Zealand's smallest, is a coastal wonderland of sea, sky, rocky headlands and bright golden beaches. The Nelson Lakes National Park is set amidst the mountains and glaciated valleys of south Nelson, and features beech forests and the beautiful jewel-like lakes, Rotoiti and Rotoroa.

Kahurangi, the country's second-largest national park comprises 450,000ha of mostly upland wilderness, with magnificent three to four-day hiking trails.

A range of adventure experiences is available including sea kayaking, whitewater rafting on the Buller River, tandem skydiving, four-wheel drive motorbiking through native forest and hiking on some of the country's best-known tracks. There's also a 35-kilometre, four-wheel drive trip along Farewell Spit, caving under Marble Mountain, and skiing or snowboarding the Rainbow ski area.
