Absolutely Angling Introduction
Ian Ruthven, your Absolutely Angling trout fishing in Taupo guide, started fly fishing when he was about nine years old with his grandfather.
In 1983 Ian founded “Absolutely Angling” based out of Taupo, providing adventures fly fishing, trout fishing and raft fishing in Taupo.
Having fished and explored the North Island of New Zealand for some 30 years, Ian has an intimate knowledge of most of the Central North Island rivers and many on the East Coast of the North Island.
Ian has been guiding and instructing people in the outdoors for over 20 years and is now one of New Zealand's most skilled and qualified guides.
Trout Fishing in Taupo
Trout fishing in the Taupo region is world famous. The difference is how you experience it. Absolutely Angling specialise in making your adventure happen, and place a high priority on providing excellent customer service.
February 2000 gave us some of the most rewarding back country fishing ever experienced. Countless brown and rainbow trout are in excess of eight pounds, and many are over ten pounds.
Trout Fishing Seasons
Winter – May to September, is the time of the year fish are running up local rivers from the lake (the trout making machine!) to spawn. Large runs of aggressive rainbows ranging from four to ten pounds plus can be followed up the rivers.
Summer – This is Ian's favourite time with sight fishing in crystal clear rivers and streams for large trout. Lots have headed up the river to spawn and are now on the way back down regaining health and weight. A five weight rod makes for exciting fishing.
Back Country Trout Fishing
These are special places that need to be cared for therefore we practice only catch and release. In most cases they are wild fisheries that are not stocked artificially.
The back country wilderness areas can be accessed for outstanding rainbow and brown trout fly fishing with the use of helicopter and raft transport.

Raft Fishing in Taupo
Raft fishing in Taupo is our speciality. We run single and multi day trips on some of the best fly fishing rivers the North Island has to offer including Tongariro raft fishing.
Raft Fishing is one of the best ways to access the remote areas where you can't get to on foot.
Experience two to five day trips into the Mohaka River. Fly up river in a Helicopter then spend two to five days rafting out and fish along the way. This is the only way to access this area. Other areas can be accessed by raft from the road.
We can provide you or your clients with a one day to five day raft fishing trips on the Tongariro, Mohaka, Ngaruroro and Rangitikei rivers. All equipment, food and transport is provided, just turn up and enjoy the trip.
Raft Fishing Seasons
Tongariro River season is from 1st December to 31st May. The best months are December and May, depending on seasonal floods.
All other rivers are approximately 1st October to 30th June.
The Taupo Region
The focus of the Taupo region is Lake Taupo – New Zealand's largest lake (619 square kilometres) and the heart of the North Island.
Lake Taupo was created by a volcanic eruption so big the sun went hazy in China (relax, that was a few thousand years ago). Almost everywhere you look there's a volcano. Just a few minutes north of the Lake at Wairakei you'll find geothermal fields, boiling mud pools and steaming geysers.
In Taupo itself, and at the little village of Tokaanu near Turangi, there are hot mineral springs that have been soothing weary souls for centuries. And the prawn burgers at the world's only geothermally heated prawn farm will blow you away.
