Winter Fly Fishing in New Zealand
During the New Zealand winter, June to September, most of the fishing areas are closed with the major exception being Lake Taupo. For anglers looking for the best winter fishing in New Zealand, this is it.
During the winter, the fish numbers increase dramatically as thousands of trout (rainbow and brown trout) leave the lake, make their way upstream migrating through the Tongariro, Tauranga-Taupo, Hinemaia and Waitahanui rivers to their spawning grounds.
Spread between April and November, the main rainbow trout runs are between June and September stimulated by rain and cooler water temperatures. Although the upper parts of the rivers are closed to protect the trout while they are spawning, in the lower sections of all the eastern tributaries the fishing is excellent. DOC (Department of Conservation) estimates the numbers of trout migrating up the Tongariro river to be about 10,000 rainbow trout and 1,000 brown trout. Average rainbow weight is about 2 kilograms and the experts consider these to be excellent 'fighting fish'.
As the Lake Taupo area is popular with both local and visiting anglers for winter fishing, we recommend early booking with local fishing tour operators so you are directed to the best angling spots.
