Weddings in New Zealand

New Zealand offers the opportunity to celebrate your special day in many different ways. Choose a traditional church setting or a scenic location such as a mountain top, beach or garden for your New Zealand wedding. Couples residing outside of, but marrying within New Zealand, are required by law to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage. To apply for a marriage certificate in New Zealand see the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages Web site. In New Zealand, a marriage may only be entered into by opposite sex couples who are not already married or the marriage has been dissolved, and they are at least 16 years of age with parental consent, or 18 years old without parental consent.

Alternatively, a civil union can be entered into by same sex or heterosexual couples who are not already married or their marriage has been dissolved, and are at least 16 years of age with parental consent, or 18 years old without parental consent. A civil union formalises a relationship between two people, so it is recognised by New Zealand law.
