R Tucker Thompson Introduction
Share a New Zealand tall ship sailing experience and step back in time to the romance of bygone years, with the tall ship "R. Tucker Thompson".
This traditional tall ship was built by Northlanders, here in New Zealand, a working replica of a Halibut Schooner. She has been operating from Opua since 1985 and is one of the foremost established working ships in the Bay of Islands.
Our New Zealand tall ship is operated as a not-for-profit trust, with profits from earned from day sails in summer going towards youth sail training programmes during winter. With her own special history, she epitomises the New Zealand way of creating a dream and living that dream.
The R Tucker Thompson has undertaken many sailing adventures including the First Fleet Reenactment round the world, as part of the Mururoa peace flotilla, trips to Japan and Korea, tall ships festivals in Canada and the USA as well as a number of Pacific voyages.
New Zealand Sailing Bay of Islands
The "R. Tucker Thompson" is spacious, with plenty of room on board to relax, read a book and soak up the sun. If you fancy something more energetic, then the crew will show you how to set the sails and you can help sail the ship!
If you really fancy adventure, then ride the bowsprit or climb the rigging, then swing off the rope for a lunch time swim.
At lunchtime, we'll find a sheltered cove and you can head ashore, have a swim or stay on board and have a drink. When you get back, we'll serve you a delicious BBQ lunch.
We have a licensed bar so you can enjoy a drink with your lunch before setting off for an afternoon sail on our New Zealand tall ship.
The friendly crew on this tall ship sailing experience will make you feel at home and share tall tales with you about past voyages. Then kick back, and experience the awesome feeling as the wind fills the sails and we sail home.
Northland Historical Cruises
The Historic Northland Cruise is run in partnership with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. These tall ship sailing experiences provide an opportunity to explore this area, so rich in history, from a tall ship similar to those arriving in earlier times.
Like early explorers, you will view these shores from the sea, and learn about significant encounters that took place between early visitors and local tribes. Some of these events led to bloodshed and tragedy through misunderstandings between cultures; others led to working relationships and lasting friendships between the different races.
On board a guest historian will share the fascinating events and stories that took place as we make our way up the coast. At sheltered anchorages (subject to weather) we will stop to go ashore and explore.
Returning back to the Bay, our final port of call will be Waitangi, the place where New Zealand's founding document was signed.
School Age Trips on our New Zealand Tall Ship
Working in partnership with other not for profit organisations, school age groups can experience a range of hands on, fun and educational activities on a half day tall ship sailing experience in Russell Kororeka.

At only NZ$20 per head, this tall ship sailing experience is easily affordable for all and a great day out for school trips.
Youth Sail Training
