Ever since New Zealand's earliest days of settlement visitors came from all over the world to Skippers Canyon. But the road to riches was also the road to hardship. The Skippers Road was hand hewn from rock by men yielding pickaxes and shovels, and in many places is perched hundreds of meters directly above the incredibly gold-rich Shotover River.

Now however, the Skippers Road can be traveled in comfort. Our luxury four wheel drive vehicles will take you on a fascinating tour into history. Guarantee of a forward facing seat, easy access, superb suspension, big viewing windows (including full length 'sky windows') full air conditioning, an authentic commentary: these are what make our journey different from any other.

We are proud of our refreshment stops—they have become highlighted features in many travel guide books. Home made delicious cheese crackers are served with tea or coffee. Perched more than 100 meters directly above the mighty Shotover River, your outdoor picnic location—surrounded by this landscape—is nothing short of breathtaking.

You may use this extended stop to have a heart-to-heart chat with the winemaker who loves to share with you their experiences. The afternoon is fully dedicated to wine tasting. Enjoy the fruits of our terroir and learn what makes wines from Central Otago so different to any other wine in the world.
