Glenorchy Air Introduction

For Lord of the Rings and Trilogytrail information please click here.

We provide scenic flights from Queenstown and Glenorchy to Milford Sound, where you can also take a cruise.

We also fly to Fiordland, Mt Cook, the Glaciers, the penguin and albatross colonies of Otago's east coast and to New Line Cinemas, Lord of the Rings movies location sites in the southern part of the south Island of New Zealand.

Glenorchy Air is a family business run by Janet and Robert Rutherford. Robert grew up in the area and knows it very well. His ancestors arrived here from Scotland in the 1860s to mine for gold. We started Glenorchy Air in 1992, so we are in our 10th year of operation.

We are uniquely placed to share our knowledge and love of the area with our guests. We have the flexibility to fit in with your requirements so long as safety is not compromised.

We specialise in providing the highest standard of personal, friendly service to clients who travel in groups of no more than six per aircraft. The pilots we employ have a love of this area and are skilled at flying in the mountains.

All our aircraft are fitted with individual head sets so the clients are able to hear the pilots informative commentary. The kea is our registered trade mark. This New Zealand parrot is the only alpine parrot in the world.

Scenic Flights

Milford Sound Spectacular - You will have a window seat with an unimpeded view, as you fly to Milford Sound through a landscape of unbelievable grandeur and beauty. By flying you see so much more than by road, as we go where no roads can.

Many people tell us that flying through this magnificent landscape to Milford Sound is one the most memorable experiences of their New Zealand visit. On all our Milford fly cruise fly excursions we return via the glaciers of the Olivine ice plateau and Barrier range, weather permitting.

Mt Cook- The flight is one of the worlds great scenic flights. Like the Grand Canyon this area is a World Heritage Area protected by UN Convention. You will enjoy unparalleled views of the New Zealand Southern Alps. You pass New Zealand's highest mountain, Mount Cook and its glaciers, experiencing living remnants of the last Ice Age.

We recommend landing at Fox township which is near the terminus of the magnificent Fox glacier, where you can take a helicopter or ski plane ride onto the glacier neve. Time is also allowed for refreshments. You will have a window seat with unimpeded views and our aircraft are equipped with individual headsets to enable you to hear the experienced pilot's informative commentary.

Glaciers - Fly back to the ice age that still grips the Olivine and Marion Ice Plateau. These plateau still look today much like the areas around Queenstown and Glenorchy would have looked 15,000 years ago!

Explore from the air the dazzling Passchendaele Icefall, the white expanse of the Bonar Glacier and the perfect symmetry of Mt Aspiring, the Southern Alps' most beautiful mountain which rises majestically two miles high. Return via the gold area of the Skippers Canyon. Allow one hour.

Wildlife - Join us on an exclusive trip to Taiaroa Head and visit the world famous colonies of the Royal Albatross, and Yellow Eyed Penguin; the world's rarest penguin.

Land close by and view these rare penguins from the trenches and hides. We are able to get within a metre or two of the birds and not disturb the penguins! It's a wonderful experience. Why not experience the wildlife of the Sub Antarctic without leaving New Zealand.

After a 45 minute flight over the Central Otago goldfields, you will see the magnificent coastline of Otago Harbour with its picturesque sandy bays.

Trilogy Trail - Lord of the Rings Tours

During the filming of the films in New Zealand we worked for New Line Cinema flying actors, crew, props, costumes and rushes around the South Island to the various locations. Join us as we journey to many of these locations. You will be able to experience at least eight major location sites on our various tours and hear about the part we had in the making of this masterpiece.

Glenorchy Air can arrange both ground and air tours to the various location sites here in the South Island of New Zealand. These include the locations used to represent Lothlorien, Amon Hen, Nen Hithoel, Amon Lhaw, Path Galen, Ford of Bruinen, The Pillars of the King on the river Anduin, Edoras, Pelennor Fields and the site of Gandalf's ride to Isengard.

From your window seat with its unimpeded view, you can let your imagination soar as you fly through the landscape of New Zealand, which becomes Middle Earth in the film with all it's unbelievable grandeur and beauty.

You can imagine yourself as Sir Ian McKellen who plays Gandalf in the first film when he flew on the back of the eagle on his escape from the top of the tower. By flying you see so much more than by road, as we go where no roads can. As we worked on the film you will hear the stories of its making.
