Stewart Island Flights Introduction

Stewart Island Flights operate two Britten Norman Islanders and have access to a Cessna 185 and Piper PA32 to maintain daily regular scheduled flights from Invercargill to Stewart Island, private Stewart Island air charters and scenic flights over Stewart Island.

There are a minimum of three scheduled flights per day. However, the number of flights increases on demand through the busy summer season, the current record held being 33 return flights in one day.

With the diversity and flexibility of the current aircraft fleet and the specialist experience of the company pilots, many other services are provided to hunters, trampers and fisherman. Using some Stewart Island beaches (Mason Bay, Doughboy, Smokey, Little Hellfire and West Ruggedy) as well as Spit Island and others in Fiordland, flying makes these areas easily accessible.

Journeying across Foveaux Strait, you will see Dog Island, with its lighthouse, outside the entrance to Bluff Harbour, Ruapuke Island and The Titi Island Group. Then, as you get closer, Stewart Island, "The Emerald of the South," appears, with its golden beaches, clear turquoise-coloured water and verdant green native bush.

Passing over some beautiful bays, you will touch down at the Ryan's Creek Airport, where a courtesy coach will take you to the Stewart Island Flights Depot at Oban Township, the hub of Stewart Island. At the Depot, which is also the Island Post Office, you can book many of the activities available on Stewart Island.

About Stewart Island

Stewart Island Flights History

Prior to the establishment of Southern Air twenty years ago, Stewart Island Air Service was an Amphibian Aircraft landing in the sea and taxiing up the beach to the local hotel (terminal building).

This service became uneconomic and a group of Southlanders formed Southern Air Ltd and built an airport on the island at Ryan's Creek. Using twin-engine Britten Norman Islander Aircraft, a fast efficient service was provided for the transportation of tourists, locals and freight.

Today Stewart Island Flights operate two Britten Norman Islanders and has access to a Cessna 185 and Piper PA32 to maintain daily regular scheduled flights.

Southern Air was taken over by established charter operator Southeast Air in March 2000 and retains the total commitment to provide a friendly, efficient air service to Stewart Island. Stewart Island Flights prides itself on having very professional and capable staff always happy to assist.

Stewart Island Flights has a history of providing an Air Ambulance Service to Stewart Island. As well as providing for emergency evacuations off Stewart Island, Stewart Island Flights can provide transfers to other centres such as Dunedin, Christchurch, as required 24 hours a day.
