About New Zealand

Lying in the south-west Pacific, New Zealand consists of two main islands—the North Island and the South Island. In addition, Stewart Island and many smaller islands lie offshore.

North Island – The North Island has a “spine” of mountain ranges running through the middle, with gentle rolling farmland on both sides. The central North Island is dominated by the Volcanic Plateau, an active volcanic and thermal area.

Auckland offers something for everyone—great beaches, a beautiful harbour, fantastic shopping, and the nightlife and culture of a metropolitan city. Rotorua is New Zealand’s world-renowned thermal resort where you will experience bubbling hot pools, geysers and warm Maori hospitality.

Further south is the Taupo region, famous for its beautiful lakes and excellent trout fishing. At the bottom of the island is the nation’s capital, Wellington, with the highest concentration of eating establishments in New Zealand, earning it the tag “cafe capital of New Zealand”.

South Island – The massive Southern Alps form the backbone of the South Island. To the east of the Southern Alps is the rolling farmland of Otago and Southland, and the vast, flat Canterbury Plains.

The South Island’s largest city, Christchurch is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place with exciting festivals, theatre, modern art galleries, great shopping and award-winning attractions. An easy drive from Christchurch is Kaikoura, famous for its whale-watching attractions.

On the rugged south-west coast is Milford Sound, once described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth wonder of the world. Nearby Queenstown is New Zealand’s adventure capital and a year-round destination for thrill-seekers.
