Our shuttle bus in Ruapehu goes anywhere and drop-off or pick-up shuttle service is the only one of its type in Ohakune and the Central Volcanic Plateau area.
In winter you can go directly to the ski-field slopes when you catch our ski shuttle.
In summer you can take our shuttles to the Tongariro Crossing or a great range of walks and guided tours. The walks are all spectacular and on the road our friendly drivers are a fountain of stories and knowledge.
Ski Shuttle – Let the ski shuttle take you right to the slopes of Turoa ski field. Ski your heart out and then the shuttle will return you from the mountain to your pick up point. You don't have to worry about driving, parking or car safety issues.
Departs every morning (when fields open) from 8:00 am and thereafter every half hour. Returns from the ski field at 12:30 pm and every hour thereafter with the last departure at 4:30 pm.
Tongariro Crossing – Take your tramping boots and a Matai Shuttle to the Tongariro Crossing and save all your energy for walking the paths. If you are a morning person you can catch the early-bird shuttle otherwise catch a later shuttle if that suits your style.
At the end of the day Matai shuttles will be there waiting for you. The last service of the day waits until the final walker is out. Like the Marines we don't leave our people behind.
National Parks Walkers Shuttle – Take a guided walk to the summit of Mt Ruapehu and see New Zealand's largest active volcanic crater lake, at 2,670 metres. Bookings are essential. Transport and Crater Walk tickets are available from Matai Lodge or be outside the Whakapapa Department of Conservation centre at 9:00 am.
Take a stunning two-hour return walk to the Waitonga Falls and onto the Old Blyth Hut with awesome views of Mt Ruapehu. Or you can extend your walk down the Old Blyth Tack, down the mountain road through the Rimu forest finishing at Ohakune.
Ohakune Night Shuttle – When you enjoy the Ohakune winter nightlife make sure you catch the Matai Night Shuttle. It runs in a half hour from the junction end of town to the main shopping or bar area of town.
This service operates only during the ski season, from mid June to mid October.
Matai Lodge has a range of rental vehicle options for those looking to be a bit more independent. We have a range of vans and cars available from NZ$75/day, trailers can be hired from NZ$40/day.
You are entitled to 250 kilometres FREE per day, after which are charged at NZ$0.20 per kilometre. Having a special event? Our 30 seater buses can be hired for your special day. Driver provided.

The 80,000 hectares Tongariro National Park (a World Heritage Area) is the centre of attraction for this district.
The active volcano Mount Ruapehu dominates the landscape, rising to 2,797 metres from the surrounding countryside.
Mount Ruapehu is the site of the North Island's premier ski fields—Whakapapa and Turoa. The mountain was recently chosen by movie director Peter Jackson to play Mt Doom in his 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
In summer the surrounding volcanic desert area is a wild and beautiful place for hiking, fishing and adventure activities.
