Twizel is located inland from Timaru on State Highway 8, in the South Canterbury region of New Zealand. The area around Twizel boasts one of the world's cleanest, driest and darkest skies. Near to Twizel, Lake Ruataniwha offers sailing, water skiing and rowing. In winter Ohau Skifield and Round Hill Ski Area offer excellent skiing and snowboarding.
