East Cape takes its name from the cape at the north-eastern end of Eastland, New Zealand. The region is traditionally accepted as the eastern side, while the western side is included in the Bay of Plenty. The East Cape Lighthouse is the eastern-most lighthouse in the world. Mount Hikurangi is the first mainland place in the world to see the sunrise.
