New Zealand enjoys miles of beautiful coastline, which make beach holidays or waterside vacations extremely popular with visitors and locals alike. Accommodation on the coastline can be as varied as the environment, but popular (and great value) self-catering choices include baches, beachhouses and bungalows.
Get away to a bach in Northland for a holiday or break from everyday life. Traditional baches (or cribs as they are sometimes called) are often simple shacks, sheds, disused railway carriages or outhouses cobbled together that have grown, organically changing with the needs of the family or the bach users.
Originally, baches accommodated the family, as well as furniture cast-offs, bunks rather than beds, stoves rather than kitchen ranges and often were located in the 'wop-wops' (remote countryside or by the beach). Nowadays, bach holidays vary enormously—from rural roots to luxury, cliff top accommodation. Beach houses and bungalows tend to be less rustic than baches, so take your pick from a taste of local life or what is typically a more comfortable accommodation choice.
Whether you want to dig out your board shorts and jandals (flip-flops or sandals), fishing rod and bait, surfboards and togs (swimming costumes) or simply get away from it all and relax, a holiday at a beach house, bach or bungalow in Northland is an excellent, self-catering choice.
