Bay of Islands main centres include Kerikeri, Paihia and Russell. Waitangi is a small historic town located near to Paihia, and is one of New Zealand's most important historic sites. It was here that the Treaty of Waitangi was originally signed on 6th February 1840 by many of the North Island Maori chiefs and British Crown representatives. Visitors can visit the The Waitangi Treaty Grounds - an accessible location for everyone.
