Taranaki is not only a place to find the soulful beauty of New Zealand's heartland, but is also home to dynamic city New Plymouth and a coastline of stunning surf beaches. Mt Taranaki is ever-present in this region—a huge, dramatic volcanic cone with a snowy top in winter months.
Taranaki’s main areas include New Plymouth (population 74,000), Hawera (South Taranaki population 26,000) and Stratford (population 8,900), with many small towns worth exploring between. more
Taranaki is connected to Auckland on just a 40 minute flight, Wellington on a 45 minute flight and Christchurch in less than an hour and a half. There are three ways to drive to Taranaki – from the north and Auckland (4.5 hours), the south and Wellington (4.5 hours) or via the scenic Forgotten World Highway, which connects to the Central North Island (2.5 hours).
