The Buller region on the West Coast is filled with caves to explore although the one in Charleston that UnderWorld Adventures operates within is a West Coast must do, only a 25minute drive from Westport. Three tour options are available although their best involves the rainforest train, a guided bush walk, exploring the caves, the galaxy of glow worms above is like looking at a beautiful milky way that leaves some speechless and then to get the heart racing again tube through the rivers rapids back to the Swingbridge which offers a great spot for photography. After all this adventure enjoy a bite to eat in the café or the sheltered beach at Constant Bay is a great place to picnic with the kids and the walks to Constant and Joyce Bays give great coastal views. more
This town was once in fierce competition with Wellington to become the capital of New Zealand the population of Charleston was once the entire population of what the West Coast is now. Those in search of gold knew how to enjoy life by having more pubs than permanent houses.
The Tiropahi Tram mountain bike Track is a great mixed grade ride and the Tiropahi Walk visits an old bush tramway. Charleston is also a place for those who like rock climbing with routes bolted on the cliff faces.
