Dun Mountain Trail

Nelson
- Grade: Intermediate - Advanced
- Duration: 4-6 hours
- Total Length: 38km
- Location: Nelson
This exciting one day ride from Nelson climbs onto the flanks of Dun Mountain on New Zealand's first railway line, before descending for over 20km back to Nelson. The Dun Mountain rises to 1129 metres and due to its unique geology, is one of the most distinctive mountains around Nelson. Early sections give glimpses of the Waimea Plains to the south and west. More extensive views can be enjoyed back across Nelson and beyond to Tasman Bay and Abel Tasman National Park. Third House is a good place to pause for a break and a chance to listen to bellbirds or be entertained by the ever-inquisitive weka. The trail's emergence on to the mountain tops near Windy Point and Coppermine Saddle offers stunning views of Tasman Bay, followed by one of New Zealand's longest mountain bike down-hills.
Many visitors drive to Nelson as part of a South Island tour. Nelson is connected by road to the West Coast via the Kahurangi National Park. It also connects to Blenheim and Christchurch via the Lewis Pass. The drive through these routes is simply stunning so make sure to allow plenty of time to stop off and take in the views.
The Nelson Tasman region is blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate and often boasts the highest annual sunshine hours in New Zealand, perfect for exploring the region's cycle trails. So if travelling in the summer months wear light clothing but also take a rain jacket just in case. Take plenty of drinking water, you will need it! Remember a bicycle repair kit and enjoy.
