Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, 28th November
What is now New Zealand's premier cycling event started back in 1977 with just 26 cyclists riding a 160-kilometre circuit around Lake Taupo in the centre of the North Island. The event now attracts over 10,000 cyclists from all over New Zealand and the world, who participate in seventeen different categories. A lead up week of cycling activities finishes with solo, endurance and relay challenge races (which are mostly non-competitive).
In 2006, the event was admitted to the prestigious UCI Golden Bike Series, thus gaining recognition as being one of the world's top seven rides. Every level of cyclist is catered for during the week with racing options offered for elite cyclists. Road cycling and mountain biking events include:
- Individual challenges – Including 160-kilometre circuit of Lake Taupo, plus mountain bike riding, tandem biking, young cyclists (5 kilometre accompanied riding for under 10 year olds) and endurance options.
- Relay races – Tarmac and dirt and tarmac options for 2-5 riders.
- Races – Men's and women's road races plus mountain biking.
- Schools – For younger riders, a tarmac relay for four riders.
