World Buskers Festival, Christchurch 21st - 31st January
If you're visiting Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island during January, then there's every chance that you'll bump into some busking action. This year is the 17th World Buskers Festival which sees over 40 of the world's best busking acts perform free street theatre, comedy and acrobatics in locations throughout the city. Great entertainment for all the family, it's well worth staying in the city to enjoy.
This year's exciting mix of circus, street and comedy performances are as eclectic as the perfomers themselves. Stand back and get ready to enjoy:
- a water balloon gladiator show with comic antics set to loud opera music
- the antics of a stand-up comedian, magician, contortionist and escapologist
- acrobatic, juggling and comedy duos
- the world's oldest comedy acrobatic duo
- dancers, clowns and lots more funny and inventive acts.
Busking Locations
City locations include popular and lively squares, Cathedral Square and Victoria Square, which lie in the heart of the city near to cafes, restaurants, visitor attractions and shops. Performances near the central Arts Centre also mean an easy walk to the Botanical Gardens, arts market, art gallery and the River Avon.
With so much going on the city, it's easy to forget that Christchurch is a city by the sea—so if time allows, why not head east to New Brighton. Just twenty minutes drive away from the city centre, New Brighton is a unspoilt, unpretentious seaside suburb with wide expansive sandy beaches offering safe swimming and great surfing opportunities. New Brighton is home to beachfront cafés, restaurants and a small shopping mall, plus a public library with fantastic seaside views from its easy chairs (well worth a sit down!). During the World Buskers Festival, New Brighton plays host to two days of busking by the beach—take the whole family, a picnic and your jandals (sandals!).
