The sunny Marlborough region is situated on the north-eastern corner of the South Island, due west of Wellington. It is New Zealand's largest grape growing and wine making region with 65 wineries and 290 grape growers.

You can pursue your passion for the good life and a fine wine through Marlborough's tranquil countryside. We highly recommend a wine-cycle tour that may include some of the main centres including Blenheim, Picton, Havelock, Renwick, Blenheim, Wairau Valley, Seddon and Kekerengu. Nearly all the wineries welcome visitors for tasting sessions and many have a cafe or restaurant on site. Sauvignon Blanc is the region's specialty. (read more)

The Mindful Traveller

The Mindful Traveller

If you want to leave just footprints behind you, here are some ideas for ways in which you can stay green and clean when visiting New Zealand and other overseas destinations.

Planning your trip

If you're still planning your trip, here are a few suggestions on how to book the cleanest getaway possible:

  • Choose an ethical destination.
  • Look for certified 'green' hotels that may use renewable energy, recycle, use eco-friendly cleaning products and offer guests eco-friendly options such as not having sheets or towels changed every day.
  • Consider staying in a smaller accommodation or B&B and support the locals.
  • Choose a green or eco-friendly tour company that may contribute to the community.

Before you go

  • A few 'earth-friendly' holiday practices can help the environment at home and away - and guess what, it's easier to conserve energy and minimise waste whilst travelling than you may think.
  • Before you go, pack re-useable water bottles.
  • Remember to turn off all fans and unplug unnecessary appliances.
  • Run the pool pump at its minimum requirements (ask a neighbour to check up on it if possible).
  • Pack a nightlight to use in your holiday accommodation, so you don't leave lights on.
  • And don't pack too much!

During your holiday

  • Stick to the accommodation's eco policy - use recycling bins, participate in linen programs, turn off lights, TV and radio and close curtains or blinds when you leave your room.
  • Use energy wisely in gyms by turning off equipment and lights not in use.
  • Try to use public transport (bikes and walking tours too) where possible and safe to do so.
  • Eat locally sourced food.
  • Don't dump your stuff and turn your waste into a local problem.

Sometimes it's hard to convince people that the scenery is real!

This rather gorgeous artwork has its roots in reality! Over 4,000 square kilometres of the South Island is International Dark Sky Reserve and covers much of the Southern Alps shown here. These beautiful skies are the ones to watch as dusk gives ways to stars.

This Month's Hot Topic: Air Quality

Q: Do you have any information on the air quality related to volcanic activity as it relates to the South Island?

Air quality in the South Island of New Zealand is amongst the best in the world. We have no volcanic fog or any volcanic air issues at all in the South. If you visit natural hot springs, such as those in Hanmer Springs, you may notice a sulphur smell, but that would likely be the closest thing to any volcanic air issue you would find.
