About the West Coast
On the wild West Coast, remnants of the ice age cascade from the snowfields of the Southern Alps to the rainforest in the valley floor, only 300 metres above sea level. Nowhere in the world are glaciers more accessible.
Join a guided walk to explore the spectacular ice formations, while learning about the flora, fauna, and the geological forces which shaped the land.
Helicopter and fixed wing aircraft provide amazing scenic flights and snow landings amidst New Zealand's highest peaks which overlook the glaciers.
A number of walking trails provide excellent vantage points for viewing the glacier and exploring the rainforest environments.
The West Coast contains the largest area of protected land of any region in New Zealand and provides access to 5 of New Zealand's 13 national parks. The southern West Coast, known as Te Wahipounamu, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its uniqueness and recognition as a truly 'special place' in the world.
