Dunedin Highlights

Dunedin is a spectacular southern location—with clear blue-green ocean, a score of white sand beaches sheltered by towering cliffs and a quiet landlocked harbour sprinkled with small bush-clad islands.

Taiaroa Head is the world's only mainland albatross breeding colony, amazingly within sight of the city's skyscape. Visit the Royal Albatross Centre for an insight into these majestic ocean wanderers.

Taiaroa Head is also the location of Fort Taiaroa and a rare Armstrong Disappearing Gun. There is a large colony of shags perched on the cliffs below.

You can also visit the home of the world's rarest penguin, the yellow-eyed penguin.

The Otago Peninsula has New Zealand fur seals and you may see young pups performing acrobatics in the tidal pools. Visit the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre at Portobello.

Dunedin is world-famous for its surfing with spectacular surf beaches just minutes from the city. Mountain biking and walking tracks are all around the city.

There are 12 golf courses in the region, with one of the country's top link courses situated just five minutes from the city.

You can fish off the coast, catch salmon in the harbour and there's trout in Lake Mahinerangi and the Taieri and Waikouaiti rivers.

Dunedin's Botanic Gardens is New Zealand's oldest botanic garden, opened in 1869. It remains one of the country's finest with an extensive rose garden, Japanese garden, bird aviary and the famous rhododendron dell.
