About New Zealand

Split into two main islands, and roughly the same size as Great Britain, New Zealand is a country of diverse geographical features—from lush rainforests and vast alpine chains, to steaming volcanoes and sweeping coastlines.

New Zealand's separation from other land masses has allowed many ancient plants and animals to survive and evolve in isolation. Of the many unique birds here, the best known is the kiwi, New Zealand's unofficial national symbol. About a quarter of the country still remains forested.

New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, has a population of over one-million people and is located near the top of the North Island, flanked by the Waitemata and Manukau harbours.

Wellington, the country's capital city, at is the southern end of the North Island and boasts around 400 cafes and restaurants.

The North Island is a land of geothermal activity, golden beaches and sub-tropical rainforests, and its climate makes for a year-round destination. Geysers, mud pools, and live volcanoes are found throughout the region.

At the heart of the North Island is Lake Taupo, the result of volcanic eruptions over two-thousand years ago.

The South Island is a land of geographic extremes, from the imposing snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps, to vast plains, glacial-fed lakes, and stunning coastal fiords. Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain is located here, flanked by the Tasman Glacier. Much of the island is densely forested.

Christchurch, the South Island's largest city, is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place with exciting festivals, theatre, modern art galleries, great shopping and award-winning attractions. An easy drive from Christchurch is Kaikoura, famous for its whale-watching attractions.

On the rugged south-west coast is Milford Sound, once described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth wonder of the world. Nearby Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital and a year-round destination for thrill-seekers.
