Waitangi Treaty Grounds Autumn Events
The Waitangi Treaty Grounds has released an autumn events programme with a variety of events running from 1 March until 18 May. Events will be held at Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi and in Te Whare Rūnanga (the carved meeting house), while an Easter Egg Hunt will be held outside on the Treaty Grounds.
CEO Greg McManus says it is great to be able to bring more events to Waitangi throughout the year and provide an ever changing programme for locals and visitors alike. “We are committed to providing a wide variety of exhibitions, shows and experiences for our visitors and the current programme certainly fulfils that goal!”
Events include the Waitangi Wahine Exhibition and a floor talk by artist Suzanne Tamaki; a public lecture by Professor James Renwick on climate change; while Archaeology Week will be celebrated by a treasure dig for kids and a lecture by Otago University archaeologist Dr Ian Smith.
Upsurge 2017 will be represented by ‘SolOthello’, a dynamic interpretation of Shakespeare’s Othello set in Te Ao Māori and performed in the beautiful Whare Rūnanga on the Treaty Grounds. A story of jealousy, betrayal, racism, love and revenge, SolOthello is a one-man performance that weaves together the original text, modern English and Te Reo Māori.
Island Breeze, a Polynesian performance group based in Hawaii, will hold six workshops with a vision of sharing the dignity and authenticity of Polynesian cultures and expressions. The workshops will include Hawaiian massage, Hula lessons, Hawaiian games, tapa making and Hawaiian stamping.
A new exhibition featuring New Zealand landscapes and imagery will be revealed on 16th April and there is an Easter Egg Hunt for children and adults on 17th April.
