Great Barrier Island is one of New Zealand’s largest offshore islands and offers a picturesque and remote getaway 100 kilometres from Auckland. Great Barrier Island as a population of about 1,000 people and is an ideal holiday destination and superb for hiking. Today about 60% of the island is administered by the Department of Conservation and much of the island is mountainous with regenerating forests – including the famous Kauri trees.
Discover the site of the Kauri Timber Company sawmill and an historic steam traction engine. At low tide, the track can be walked around the shoreline, beginning at The Green Campsite.
