During the New Zealand Wars, the Waikato Military Settlement was established in Mercer and by 1866, the town was a busy river port for paddle steamers, which traded between Ngaruwahia and Hamilton.
Mercer is home to the Mercer Skydiving Centre and also offers east access to the Coromandel Peninsula.
