Centrally located in the Bay of Plenty about 100 kilometres southeast of Tauranga, and surrounded by an abundance of natural resources, the Kawerau District offers a unique lifestyle and business environment. Mount Edgecumbe/Putauaki lies three kilometres from the young Kawerau township which sprang up around the pulp and paper mill in the 1950's - still the main industry of the Kawerau District today - and dominates the scenery. Obtain a permit and climb the 2-hour trail to the summit of Mt Putauaki, or obtain a permit to access the spectacular Tarawera Falls and watch as the Tarawera River plunges 65 metres down a sheer cliff. The Whirinaki Forest Park is located about an hour and a half drive from Kawerau and is a publicly accessible Conservation Park with towering trees, rushing rivers and waterfalls and diverse wildlife - well worth the drive!
A trip with Kiwi Jet Boat Tours up the Rangitaiki River can truly be described as "unforgettable" from the beginning to end. Pass through some of New Zealand's best trout fishing water, sheep and dairy farms, under tunneled willow trees and into a natural gorge enhanced by weeping falls and caves and dominating white water rapids.
