Kawerau

Centrally located in the Bay of Plenty about 100 kilometres southeast of Tauranga, and surrounded by an abundance of natural resources, the Kawerau District offers a unique lifestyle and business environment. Mount Edgecumbe/Putauaki lies three kilometres from the young Kawerau township which sprang up around the pulp and paper mill in the 1950's - still the main industry of the Kawerau District today - and dominates the scenery. Obtain a permit and climb the 2-hour trail to the summit of Mt Putauaki, or obtain a permit to access the spectacular Tarawera Falls and watch as the Tarawera River plunges 65 metres down a sheer cliff. The Whirinaki Forest Park is located about an hour and a half drive from Kawerau and is a publicly accessible Conservation Park with towering trees, rushing rivers and waterfalls and diverse wildlife - well worth the drive!
