Te Anau Horse Trekking Tours

Te Anau in Fiordland, New Zealand is an ideal base for exploring the Fiordland region. An attractive resort town and holiday destination, Te Anau is just twenty minutes drive from picturesque Lake Manapouri. more

Te Anau township in Fiordland, New Zealand lies at the base of Mt Luxmore and the Murchison mountain range. It boarders Lake Te Anau which is the largest lake in the South Island (depths of over 400m) and the second largest in New Zealand.

Te Anau is the main gateway to the fiords, Fiordland National Park and Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. The town is located between Queenstown to Milford Sound. By road it’s a 2 hour drive from Queenstown and about 2 ½ hours from Milford Sound. Regular guided tours to Milford Sound depart from Te Anau. Other than by car or motorhome, transport to Te Anua is via regular scheduled coach services.

The weather in Te Anau in winter is cold with frosty mornings and clear days. Rain is reasonably common and occasional snow. Summer weather is generally hot and dry with temperatures averaging about 20 degrees celcius.

A wide range of accommodation are available and the area boasts about 4,000 beds from hotels, lodges, motels, homestyle bed and breakfast through to backpacker, budget and holiday park accommodation. Travellers are advised to book in during the summer months December, January and February as accommodation is likely to be in high demand.

Te Anau is a tourist town and as such caters for visitors seven days a week. There is a variety of local cafes, takeaway outlets, restaurants and shops. Other normal services include banks, service stations for fuel, medical centre and Te Anau rental car hire.

Two of New Zealand’s great walks also start at Lake Te Anau. The world renowned Milford Track starts at its northern point, while the popular Kelper Track starts and ends at the lake’s south end which is an easy walk from Te Anau town centre.

Visitors to Te Anau have a good choice of things to do and see walks, tramping, scenic flights, boat cruises, kayaking, fishing, golf, tours and more. Be sure to visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves. This is a rare example of a living cave that is still under formation. A lovely cruise across the lake drops you off at a place called The Grotto where a short walk and boat ride takes you deep into the 15,000 year old cave, lit by thousands of tiny Glowworm insects.
