Palmerston North, also known locally as "Palmy" is situated on the Manawatu River and is New Zealand's seventh biggest city. It was named in honour of Viscount Palmerston, a former Prime Minister of Great Britain.
The original Maori clearing in what was once predominantly a forest area is known as 'The Square' today and is the centre point of the city. It's a seven hectare park of lawn, trees, fountains and gardens. It is also the point from where the main streets of the city are arranged.
This local favourite is a beautiful and extensive inner city park adjacent to the Manawatu River, which was opened to mark Queen Victoria's 60th Jubilee. Victoria Esplanade comprises of 19 hectares of stunning gardens and features, including bird aviaries, nature trails with a number of walks, a large duck pond, free barbeque facilities and children’s paddling pool and playgrounds.
