Established in 1863 and originally named Dunstan Creek, St Bathans is a former gold and coal mining town that lies deep in the heart of the Maniototo in New Zealand's Otago region. St Bathans' prominent feature is the Blue Lake, a small lake formed during gold-sluicing, which gives it a distinctive turquoise colour and is great for swimming and boating. Dating back to 1882, the Vulcan Hotel is another popular attraction as it is said to be haunted by a female ghost.
