TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK - Ruapehu (North Island)
Tongariro National Park is located arounf the Ruapehu area and has within it's boundaries the Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu volcanoes. With an area of 80,000 hectares, the park gifted to the nation by Maori chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV in 1887. The park has been awarded dual World Heritage Site status. Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a popular 1 day trek.
