VOG (volcanic fog on the South Island)
( South Island - Visitor Information)
Hello,My husband and I wish to visit your beautiful country in January/February next year. Problem is, on recent visits to Hawaii after the volcanic eruption on The Big Island, I became quite ill with flu-like symptoms that the doctors there attributed to volcanic air having been carried by shifting winds. I was very ill for the whole trip and an expensive vacation was wasted.Do you have any information to share with us on the air quality related to volcanic activity as it relates to the South Island? We want to come for a memorable trip, but I don’t want to be sick.Thank you,Dr. Elizabeth Cates

Air quality in the South Island of New Zealand is amongst the best in the world. We have no volcanic fog or any volcanic air issues at all in the South. If you visit natural hot springs, such as those in Hanmer Springs, you may notice a sulphur smell, but that would likely be the the closest thing to any volcanic air issue you would find.
