Glenorchy
Glenorchy is a small settlement on the northern end of Lake Wakatipu about 40km from its well-known neighbour, Queenstown. Founded by Scheelite miners in 1862, this township has a general store, country pub and several places to stay. Here visitors can enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand in a location much sought after by the film industry (Narnia trilogy, Wolverine and The Lord of the Rings). more
Glenorchy, also called the "Gateway to Paradise", is extremely popular with hikers. Not only is the world-famous Routeburn Track close by, but there are numerous multi-day hikes and day walks to choose from including: Sugarloaf and 5 Passes Route, Scotts Creek, Greenstones and Caples Track and the Rees Dart (which starts and finishes near Glenorchy).
Hiking is a great summer pursuit, however car should be taken in autumn, winter and spring as unexpected snowfall and wintry conditions are possible. Hikers should register their intention to hike with the Department of Conservation.
Aside from hiking, popular Glenorchy activities include jet boating on the Dart River, mountain biking, kayaking (a truly beautiful experience at sunrise) and horse trekking (highly recommended). Scenic flights offer a breath-taking, once-in-a-lifetime experience and the waters around Glenorchy provide some of the best fly fishing opportunities in New Zealand.
