Craters of the Moon Thermal Area is a geothermal attraction located north of Taupo, New Zealand.

This is a walk with a difference! Named for its other-worldly atmosphere, the Craters of the Moon Thermal Area in Wairakei Tourist Park sprang up in the 1950s, when the nearby power station lowered underground water levels. Wairakei Tourist Park is the largest geothermal field in New Zealand.

The 30-minute walk around Craters of the Moon visits bubbling craters, fumaroles, mud pools and steam vents. You can also see a lot of interesting plants that have adapted to thrive in the hot, steamy conditions. Enjoy this fantastic geothermal area along well-formed pathways with elevated viewing platforms for just a small fee.

Open 364 days a year, the walk is suited to people of all ages and fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible.

Craters of the Moon Thermal Area is easily reached by car from Taupo. It is located at the end of Karapiti Road, off State Highway 1, just north of Taupo.
