About Whitianga

Whitianga is a beautiful coastal resort town some two and a half hours drive from Auckland. Situated on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, Whitianga has been continuously occupied for more than a thousand years since Maori explorer Kupe’s tribe settled here after his visit in about 950 A.D.

Some of the Whitianga attractions are:

• Cathedral Cove – the much photographed, world famous cave through the white headland
• Hahei Beach – named after the Maori Chief Hei
• Cooks Beach – a popular visitor destination, flanked by Shakespeare Cliff to the west and the picnic spot of Purangi River to the east
• Hot Water Beach – For two hours either side of low tide, visitors can dig themselves into the sand and enjoy the hot spring waters

The Coromandel Region

East of Auckland lays The Coromandel Peninsula, on the other side of the Hauraki Gulf.

Impressive and heavily forested, a mountain range runs right up the middle of this peninsula—bordered on each side by kilometres of spectacular coastline.

On the west coast, there’s a never-ending parade of beaches, coves and harbours lined with pohutukawa trees. The eastern side of the Coromandel is furnished with an amazing collection of white sand and surf beaches.
