Pelorus Sound is the largest of the four sounds which make up the Marlborough Sounds, in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. These four sounds are Kenepuru, Pelorus, Mahau and Queen Charlotte - with Kenepuru being located within Pelorus Sound.

The seaside township of Havelock is the gateway to Pelorus Sound. Havelock, located just half an hours drive from Picton, is a quaint little fishing village known as the Mussel Capital of the World.

Pelorus Sound is a vast area of great natural beauty, boasting crystal clear and sheltered waters, beautiful lush native bush, and a choice of walks offering stunning scenery. Marine, sheep and cattle farms abound throughout Pelorus Sound.

Known as the mussel capital of the world, an amazing amount of birdlife and marine life thrives in Pelorus Sound. Be sure to look out for mussel farms, dolphins, seals, penguins, wekas, tuis and moreporks.

Pelorus Sound Activities

Nydia Track is a 27 kilometre, 2 day track through beautiful unspoiled native forest. This track takes you along the shoreline of Nydia Bay, through native bush and crosses the Kaiuma and Nydia saddles. You will also be treated to spectacular views. If you would like a shorter track, you can walk the Opouri Bridal Track or Archers Track.

Hire a kayak and explore the treasures of Pelorus Sound on it's crystal clear, sheltered waters. Tennyson Inlet, Elaine Bay and Tui Nature Reserve are all popular and breathtaking remote places.

Pelorus Mail Boat Scenic Cruise

Join the world famous Pelorus Mail Run in delivering crucial supplies and mail the same way it has been done for decades - by boat! Operated out of Havelock, this unique scenic boat cruise will take you to isolated homesteads nestled in quiet secluded bays and past mussel farms. Old timers row out in dinghies to meet the mail boat, while others receive their supplies on tiny, unspoilt beaches. Truly an amazing experience not to be missed!
