History and Heritage - Tennis Open New Zealand
Home of the Heineken Open, the ASB Bank Tennis Centre was built in 1920 and hosted its first first international tournament in 1956. In the decades after, it attracted a "who's who" of international tennis luminaries: Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Evonne Goolagong, Billie Jean King, Rosie Casals, Brian Fairlie, Russell Simpson, Chris Lewis and Bjorn Borg.
In the 1980s the Open was included for the first time in the ATP Tour. In 1988 a multi-million dollar redevelopment of the stadium was unveiled, firmly planting the Open on the international map.
Heineken Sponsorship - Auckland Tennis
2007 Marks the 9th consecutive year that Heineken has sponsored the tournament. Past players in the tournament have included Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Jim Courier, Gustavo Kuerten and Marat Safin.
The tournament acts as a perfect springboard for players as they make their way toward the Australian Open in Melbourne. Many who play at the Heineken Open go on to compete very well at the Australian Open.
A feature of the Heineken Open is the Heineken Summerhouse, where attendees can get a freshly poured Heineken on tap, share some fine international food with friends, and experience the tennis action in style.
