This trail is 301 km from Mt Cook to Oamaru, the Alps 2 Ocean sees New Zealand in all its colour and beauty, from our highest mountain, past great lakes and rivers, and down to the ocean. Suitable for beginners, the 8 section bike trail is an easy to intermediate grade, offering a pleasing mix of on and off-road terrain which links the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean. Experience an unspoilt paradise where people come from all over the world to enjoy stunning vistas, wide open spaces and expansive landscapes. The Alps 2 Ocean trail encompasses a World Heritage National Park, glacial fed lakes, hydro dam lakes, golden tussock land, limestone cliffs, Māori Rock art and more. Allow 4-6 days for the entire ride, or simply try a day excursion. Whichever option you choose, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is sure to be a memorable experience.
Daily bus services operate to Mt Cook from Christchurch, Queenstown and Twizel. It takes about 4 hours to drive from Christchurch, three hours from Queenstown or just forty five minutes from Twizel.
The trail includes a number of sections on public roads, where riders should be prepared to meet vehicles. You may also encounter stock grazing along the roadside or being moved. Mobile phone coverage is generally good along the entire trail, though may be patchy in places.
