The Timber Trail
- Grade: Easy to Advanced
- Duration: 2 days
- Total Length: 87km
- Location: Waikato
This spectacular 88km trail offers riders the chance to experience the rich heritage of the Pureora Forest Park. Cyclists will ride through forest terrain, passing 800-year-old trees, a bush tramway and historic timber-milling sites. Situated within a three hour drive of Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua and Taupo, the trail is quite central and will also cater for all levels of cycling ability. Expect to be wowed by the views offered by the splendour of the forest, and the sounds of birdcalls as you meander 83km across the middle of the North Island. Organise a ride along the Timber Trail soon, you won't regret it.
The Timber Trail begins in Pureora Forest Village. However, the trail may also be ridden from Ongarue. Or a third option for cyclists wishing to ride a day section is to begin in the middle of the trail at Piropiro campsite on Kokomiko Road.
The trail rises to 980m above sea level and can be cold, even on a summer's day. Riders are encouraged to carry warm clothing and wet weather gear at all times. There are minimal water stops along the trail - they include drinking water from a stream. Although the water is clean you may choose to carry water purification tablets.
