Palmerston North, also known locally as "Palmy" is situated on the Manawatu River and is New Zealand's seventh biggest city. It was named in honour of Viscount Palmerston, a former Prime Minister of Great Britain.
The original Maori clearing in what was once predominantly a forest area is known as 'The Square' today and is the centre point of the city. It's a seven hectare park of lawn, trees, fountains and gardens. It is also the point from where the main streets of the city are arranged.
