I am writing from Canada. This is our plan :1 march 2017 ,pick up campervan at Auckland airport .2 march take ferry to South Island. Travel and visit for 15 days in South Island .On march 18 or 19 take ferry back to North Island. Visit and travel North Island for 7 days.Return campervan at Auckland airport on march 26, 2017.I have 2 questions : is this plan realistic and possible to do while enjoying ourselves ?When is it better to book the ferry, now or later ?

Yes it is realistic, but it is a big drive from Auckland to the ferry terminal in Wellington, so you may want a night in between. Another option could be to just do a one way trip down the islands and leave your camper down south (if you chose a nationwide chain) and then fly back to Auckland. I suggest you book your ferry in advance. You could always contact them directly and ask if they get fully booked in March and when you should book.
